Pair of Regency Chairs Regency Period England circa 1820. Attributed to Gillows. Primary
Woods: Mahogany Seats upholstered.
Design:
The upper with rounded and finely curved
deep one piece toprail-the curving at the top is very pronounced
and finely done. When the chair is viewed from the side
the skill of the chairmaker becomes even more apparent.
Shaped one piece upright flowing downward to end in a sweeping
back leg. The front legs are turned with spaced deep reeding.

Related Design/Gillow Information: In 1813 the Gillows firm of Lancaster & London supplied a set of
Dining tables with "Stout Twined Reeded Legs"
comparable to the legs on these chairs, to Broughton Hall,
Yorkshire.
A dining table with comparable leg design-Attributed
to Gillows supplied to John, 2nd Marques of Bute (d1848) for either Cardiff Castle or Luton Park, was sold by the late 6th
Marquess of Bute,Christie's/London
/7/3/1996-lot#43. A table with almost identical spaced reedings and turnings was sold by Christie's/London,
7/6/07-lot #175-p72-ill- Attributed to Gillows.
