SOUTHERN BEAUTY!
“Neat & Plain” Circa 1750 Queen Anne Console Table Virginia ~ Possibly Rappahannock River Basin area
IRISH INFLUENCED
Stylistic Observation: Having no additional decoration
or embellishment this piece typifies the term "Neat & Plain" a descriptive term often used to describe the graceful
lines of Southern furniture. Subdued straight cylindrical
turned legs as seen here is a British trait of the period obviously carried over by the many immigrant British cabinetmakers
who settled in the area around Virginia (South) & (Northern) North Carolina, especially the Irish whose furniture styles
back in Great Britain differed from the English styles of the period, a trait which followed to the shores of 18th
Century America and is often more apparent on pieces which originate in communities in the South where larger numbers of Irish
cabinetmakers settled. The turned legs tapering to
end in "Dutch" pad & "disk" feet. The
rectangular top which is one board with rounded edge over a straight- apron/front & sides. Construction: The legs and apron joined by "pinned
corner tennon joints"- (the pins visible in the photos). The inner frame/underside( see photos) with pockets gouged to
receive holding screws- Underside
of top shows evidence of Period work - hand sawing and hand smoothing - typical of the mid 18th Century- see images-
looks to have been nailed at top to the tops of the legs judging by the holes visible in tops of legs with top removed - holes
visible in bottom of feet when piece turned upside down where castors or fastenings may once have been set Condition: Structurally sound..tight joints..some older fills and touch ups to
line cracks and cracks at top of legs and at pad feet...the pad feet with wear- some more than others..one or two
cracks touched up- the top (see images) with a shrinkage crack running end to end but after 250 years nothing that is not
to be be expected- top looks to have been removed and reset more than once (only evident with the top removed.) When
the top is removed the witness marks where the glue blocks have been show that all is original. Slight protrusion to some
of the pins (tennons) which is due to shrinkage due to age and a good sign. To sum up... a great piece! Please note: all screws
present are replaced
