MARYLAND Pair of Hepplewhite Walnut chairs originating in Maryland with Yellow Pine glue blocks and original
slip seat frames (later filler and webbing). One of chairs has all Yellow Pine glue blocks the other has two Yellow Pine glue
blocks (front) and two Mahogany blocks at the rear. The glue
block arrangement is two part and quarter round, similair to which can be seen on Annapolis chairs attributed to John Shaw. The cross stretcher is dovetailed into the side rails, the
chair frame construction is Tennoned. The carved
back splat is of one piece of wood which sits directly into the seat frame in the Chippendale manner suggesting a transitional
period. The front legs are splayed with an inside taper. Dimensions:

16 1/4" Height floor to seat rail: 17" Width of toprail" 17 1/2" Inner back rails marked on both: I & III
Condition: Nice mellow color on both chairs,
and a subtle finish. Minor wear to legs and various areas-uprights, some scuffing to front corners of legs that is commensurate
with age. Tight joints and sturdy. The Pine slip frames are bare showing wear from tack holes and some losses
to various areas, there is remainder of modern webbing/tacks- the slip frames are also marked and are of the period.
Please note: Slip seat frame information The wood appears to be Yellow Pine. The webbing on the slip seat
frames is modern/there is some losses and damage to the slip seat rames due to multiple nail breaches. The nails visble

click for large views. Markings on slip seat frrames are II & III. Slip seat frames have tennoned joints/wear
and damage commensurate with age and use. Visible in the images are modern staples which have been put in to re-inforce the
