Rare Documented Georgian Writing Box

"Sangwine & Sons, Shaving Case & Pocket Book Manufactory

No 38 Strand, London"

Institutional Quality & Rarity

Rectangular case with hinged lid, the whole piece veneered in thick Figured Mahogany, the front with a brass diamond shaped escutcheon, each side with (lower section) drawers with the original brass dropped handles affixed.  The drawer on the right side of the box is unusual as it is pinned within the case and pulls out from the case to face the front side of the box (see image), the drawer to the lower left side of the box pulls out normally and is larger than the other and also dovetailed.  The lock plate and catch are both later replacements as is the modern baize writing surface.

The exterior of the case is in very good condition with a good dark patina and great figuring to the Mahogany, with only a few minor checks and cracks to the top.  The hinges to the writing surfaces appear original with some later screws.  The bottom or underside of the case has been covered with burlap and is missing some of the lipping.  The right side drawer is missing some small dividers and the large compartments under the front interior writing surface is missing a divider and has some cracking to the bottom- this section was covered with felt prior to our acquisition of the box.  Minor condition issues for a box of this age and rarity.
